30.11.2009: SPEA at Productronica 2009, Introducing Innovative Flying Probe to Replace Bed-of-nails In Production Test

SPEA at Productronica 2009, Introducing Innovative Flying Probe to Replace Bed-of-nails In Production TestVolpiano, 5th October 2009

SPEA announces its participation at Productronica 2009, scheduled for November 10th through 13th in Munich, at the Messe München International.
At booth n. A1.255, SPEA will demonstrate once again its lead in test equipment innovation, with the introduction of the all new 4030 Flying Probe Tester.
4030 is expressly designed to replace bed-of-nails systems in the production test of SMT boards: It overcomes accessibility limits, offering high productivity, great flexibility and low cost of test in a compact footprint.
4030 is based on the revolutionary concept of a low cost, modular and scalable composition, designed to be integrated in automatic in-line cells.
Using the same modularity concepts of pick&place systems, the flying probe test cell is composed by the number of systems required to match the production line takt time, with an optimized, integrated working. As well as in in-line test cells, the system can be used in off-line stations.
The 4030 is the ideal test solution when the accessibility limits make it difficult to perform the in-circuit test with traditional bed-of-nails systems. The extreme probing accuracy allows the flying probes to contact directly the pins of ultra fine pitch components such as 01005, 0201, RQFP, performing complete multifunction tests for a coverage comparable to a traditional bed of bed-of-nails system.
The overall cost of test is greatly reduced thanks to the minimized setup and maintenance costs: no fixture is required for contacting; the program generation from CAD data is a fast, automated process; the system setup is automatic and immediate, without requiring the presence of an operator since it is enough to load the test program for the product to be tested. The product component layout changes or modifications are not a problem, since it is enough to modify the test program accordingly.

SPEA 4040 Multimode Flying Probe Tester
On the show floor at Productronica will be also the SPEA 4040 Multimode, which already represents the reference system for the flying probe tester market, thanks to its performances and flexibility in use. This polyvalent system is able to cover a wide range of production requirements, with its high mechanical speed, the high accuracy, the comprehensive range of board loading modules, the overall configurability and the fast setup changes.
The system can be flexibly used either in automated way (with in-line integration, or automated loaders/unloaders of boards from racks) or loading the board manually, with no need of changeover operations.
By using its 6 probes (4 for the top and 2 for the bottom side of the board), the system can contact simultaneously both sides of the board, so it represents the most convenient solution when not all components are accessible by just one side. The dual-sided probing reduces the number of moves required to execute the test program: since test time mostly depends on the probe movement time, it is strongly reduced.
When it is required to contact both side of the board to execute the test, the double-sided probing allows the system to test the complete board with the same test program, with no need to manage different programs for the two sides, while eliminating the handling time otherwise required to flip over the board.

SPEA 3030 Series ICT Board Testers
With the 3030, SPEA provides a range of ICT board testers aimed to answer all the different test requirements: from the need of an easy-to-use affordable in-circuit tester to that one of a multi-function and very high throughput test system. This versatility is attained thanks to the variety of tester models and board receivers available and to the open and modular system architecture: it is possible to choose the tester most adapt to the production needs, and modify and expand it in any moment to meet new test requirements.
At Productronica, the SPEA 3030 will show a compact, flexible solution, which represents an ideal entry-level system, equipped with a universal connector interface.

All SPEA testers, either flying probe or bed-of-nails, have been designed to offer the highest versatility, thanks to their modularity and expandability.
Each system can be equipped with the instrumentation to execute In-Circuit test (powered-up or not) and functional test as well as on board programming, optical test, boundary scan test, power functional test, dynamic digital, cluster and open pin test. In this way the systems, which are scalable and expandable also after purchasing, can satisfy all different test needs.
